PTA SPOTLIGHT: Q&A
Heather Scholes, Chair of Memorial Day Events
*Over the week before Memorial Day and through the holiday weekend, the PTA hosts a marathon of events ranging from a dog parade and cupcake cafe to a huge country fair.*
How did you come to run the Memorial Day festivities?
I co-chaired Memorial Day last year with Mariana Mingo. When the PTA nominated me to chair it this year, I knew I had learned enough from Mariana to take it on again.
What is the goal of the festivities?
Over the years, the Memorial Day fundraiser has evolved to accommodate the changing needs of the community, but it remains the PTA's largest fundraiser of the year. It is a week of events that bring the school and greater Bronxville community together with the aim of increasing school spirit and having attendees leave with a greater appreciation of our small town traditions.
What's the hardest part about what you do?
Knowing that there is always a chance of a rainout!
What do you love about the experience?
Meeting and working with so many amazing parents, faculty and staff is definitely a highlight for me. It makes me appreciate even more what a supportive and amazing school community we are a part of.
You need an army of volunteers to make it happen! What would you say to encourage people to help out?
Altogether we need approximately 500 volunteers to make Memorial Day run smoothly! Look out for Sign Up Geniuses coming in April. We have slots for everything from sorting used books to being a safety post in the village for the Run for Fun.
Events are split up by specific grades to create camaraderie among parents within the same grade. But don't let this deter you from helping out at any of the other events. We also look to MS and HS students to volunteer at the Country Fair, Run for Fun and the Dog Show. Hours worked count towards community service hours.
This seems like a huge job! What would you say to encourage other parents to take on leadership roles in the PTA in the future?
Any role on the PTA is a great way to get to know the school better as a whole and to be a part of making positive things happen for your children at the school. Memorial Day specifically is a very high touch committee, where you get to know a lot about how the PTA works and have a great deal of interaction with other PTA Executive Board members as well as school administrators and support staff. Most of the work for Memorial Day is concentrated within the months of March to May. It's also a lot of fun and the perfect way to spend time with your friends while contributing to the PTA and channeling your inner event planner.
